RACE Approved for 1 CE/CPD Credit
Join ultrasound educator Dr. Camilla Edwards, DVM, CertAVP, MRCVS as she demonstrates ultrasound techniques that improved the diagnosis and management of 4 feline and canine cases of gastrointestinal masses and disease.
In this 1-hour webinar, Dr. Edwards will share real case studies where she used wireless ultrasound to perform her systematic abdominal assessment. She’ll teach:
- How to perform a thorough ultrasound exam of the stomach, small, and large intestines
- Patient positioning and ultrasonographic appearances of the normal GI tract
- Localization of focal disease in the jejunal wall and normal measurement criteria
- Recognizing thickened stomach wall and changes in local lymph nodes suggesting pathology
- Ultrasound guided sampling techniques for a definitive diagnosis and prognosis
Ultrasound is widely used in the evaluation and diagnosis of GI tract abnormalities. In this webinar, Dr. Camilla Edwards will demonstrate her systematic hands-on scanning techniques for the detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal disease in veterinary patients.
There is a wide variety of gastrointestinal diseases seen in small animal veterinary practice. Fortunately for us, Dr. Edwards will share four case studies providing tips and tricks needed to identify, locate, and characterize various abnormalities of the GI tract using handheld ultrasound. Â
She’ll teach us how to identify the different wall layers seen in the components of the normal gastrointestinal tract. You’ll then learn how to differentiate types of gastrointestinal disease, distinguishing between neoplastic and inflammatory diseases. Narrowing the differential in real-time will help determine the appropriate next steps in patient management. Â
In case 1, with a domestic short-haired cat presenting with a history of weight loss, Dr. Edwards will demonstrate how POCUS allowed her to identify and measure a section of thickened jejunal wall. Â
In case 2 of an Australian Shepherd with chronic diarrhea, Dr. Edwards will share ultrasound imaging that showed pronounced thickening of the ascending colon wall, also noting loss of wall layering and hyperechoic reactive fat in the region.Â
In case 3, with a Turkish Van cat with history of vomiting, she’ll share a POCUS exam that revealed a mass in the stomach wall and a large lymph node caudal to the mass.Â
Case 4 is quite a remarkable intestinal ultrasound in a Staffordshire Bull Terrier suffering dramatic weight loss and diarrhea. Dr. Edwards will show a large mass in the intestinal wall. Using a phantom, Dr. Edwards will then demonstrate how to use ultrasound to safely guide an accurate fine needle aspiration for a definitive diagnosis, which in this case confirmed intestinal lymphoma.Â
To complement each of the 4 cases, Dr. Edwards will demonstrate her abdominal scanning techniques using videos taken with her own Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, PIPI. This will help not only hone your ultrasound scanning skills, but also provide a baseline for distinguishing normal from abnormal anatomy. Â
Dr. Edwards will be joined by your host and emergency physician Dr. Oron Frenkel and sonographer Shelley Guenther who will showcase live scanning with the new Clarius C7 Vet HD3!
