While difficult intravenous access (DIVA) is a common challenge, “ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous catheter (USGPIV) insertion is a successful modality for obtaining intravenous (IV) access in patients with DIVA,” with marked “improvements in time-to-IV-access, time-to-laboratory-results, time-to-IV-analgesia.” When performing a PIV insertion with Clarius high-definition ultrasound, simply use the Venous preset to identify the right site to access an identifiable peripheral vein, and then visualize your cannula to guide successful catheter placement.
