Health Canada Approves Clarius MSK AI for Automating Musculoskeletal Measurements During an Ultrasound Exam

Clarius MSK AI helps clinicians quickly recognize ultrasound anatomy by automatically identifying, highlighting and measuring tendon structures in the foot, ankle, and knee during an ultrasound exam.

Vancouver, BC, Canada, March 26, 2024 –  Clarius Mobile Health, a leading provider of high-definition handheld ultrasound systems, has received approval from Health Canada for its MSK AI model, which automatically identifies and measures tendons in the foot, ankle, and knee using artificial intelligence (AI). MSK AI is now available in Canada with the Clarius L7 HD3 and Clarius L15 HD3 high-frequency wireless handheld ultrasound scanners.

“Having an AI tool that automatically measures tendons is beneficial for sports doctors and their patients because it helps us track the results of our injection treatments over time,” says Dr. Frank Johnson, a family physician who now practices sports medicine. “It’s a tedious task to freeze and pop on calipers and my measurements are not always perfectly accurate. Now that the tendon measurement process is automated, I’m going to measure the tendons more frequently. And this will allow me and my patients to see if inflammation is decreasing and to know with certainty that the treatment is working.”

Powered by artificial intelligence and designed to work wirelessly with current iOS and Android devices, Clarius has miniaturized diagnostic quality ultrasound to the size of a smartphone.  Affordable and easy to use, Clarius offers a comprehensive line of wireless scanners designed to deliver superior imaging for an extensive range of clinical applications. For physiatry, orthopaedic surgery, pain management, and rheumatology, clinicians can choose from three linear scanners, the Clarius L15  HD3, Clarius L7 HD3 and Clarius L20 HD3 with the Clarius C3 HD3 convex for deeper hip and spine imaging.

“There’s no question that ultrasound imaging is the safest and fastest way for clinicians to see inside the body in real-time, but novice users typically require extensive training to use it,” says Clarius President and CEO Ohad Arazi. “AI-powered ultrasound is exciting because it’s enabling healthcare practitioners who are new to ultrasound to acquire quality images and make meaningful clinical decisions quickly, even during a first visit. MSK AI is one of many AI innovations on our product road map that we’re excited to introduce to the medical community in Canada.”

The Clarius MSK AI model is designed to streamline workflows, inform clinical management, and provide training assistance during musculoskeletal scanning for specific anatomical sites, which include: the plantar fascia (foot), Achilles tendon (ankle), and patellar tendon (knee). The AI analyzes ultrasound imaging in real-time and displays a transparent color overlay to identify the tendon in view. Upon freezing the image, the AI labels the tendon and determines the greatest thickness, automatically placing measurement calipers that correspond to the top and bottom of the tendon at its thickest region. The user may alter the measurement calipers to make any necessary adjustments to support clinical decision-making.
